Review:
The boot thief by John Heffernan
Lothian Children's
Books
(Giggles series) 2007
(6+) Another in the Giggles series, written for kids who are starting
chapter books,
The boot thief
creates a familiar and sympathetic setting as the children on the farm
are puzzled about who or what is stealing everyone's boots. The
children laugh at dad, having to wear one gum boot and one riding boot
as he goes out to work on the farm, but this laughter soon turns to
frustration when their boots go missing. They decide to catch the thief
and set up an elaborate system to wake them when the thief comes
looking for a new boot. All good fun in easy bites of text, separated
by marvelous drawings by Stephen Axelsen,
Heffernan's stories are always a
treat, coming as they do from his vast experience on farms.
