Review:
Kenny's big adventure by Philip Garside
Lothian Books, 2007
Ages 10-13
When KB, his autistic brother, Martin, friend Josh, his Dad and Dad's
friend Jim go off to Tasmania in search of the thylacine, excitement
mounts as the boys realize they are being followed. A neat story, well
rounded with engaging characters,
Kenny's
big adventure will please
upper primary and lower secondary readers, looking for a mystery. There
have been several other books with the thylacine as the central quest,
but this one has the added bonus of it being about 3 boys, one
disabled, and 2 adults on the prowl. It's an involved and exciting read
with a strange twist towards the end that takes it on a quite different
tack. Another bonus is the way in which it is presented. The narrator,
KB, thinks he is writing an autobiography, and so tells all, but with
the inclusion of hints from his teachers about his writing as he is
telling the story. It's an interesting addition which could be talked
about in the classroom.
